ZEISS, a German manufacturer of optical systems and optoelectronics, started the construction on an R&D and manufacturing base in SIP on Oct 18. Despite its deep root in the fast-growing industrial park since 2006, it is the first time for the company to build a facility on a land plot for which it has acquired the use right. This marks a milestone in the company’s localization in China.
Founded in 1846, ZEISS is active in the business segments of industrial quality and research, medical technology, consumer markets and semiconductor manufacturing technology in almost 50 countries. It entered the Chinese market in 1957, and set up a branch in SIP in 2006 to specialize in making components for surgical microscopes and other high-tech, high-precision products.
The new facility, with a total investment of US$25 million, will deal with R&D, manufacturing, management and marketing of a pipeline of products for ZEISS’ global clients, and services for customers in Greater China.
